It wasn’t an all-at-once decision. I took a year or two to decide that I didn’t want to stay in academia. A new postdoc joined our group in my fourth year, and he was on his third postdoc. I started to realize that, if I wanted to be hired at a research university, I’d probably have to take two or three postdoc positions before landing a tenure-track position…if I were lucky. That meant I could be 35 before having anything like a stable job, and by age 42 I’d be up for tenure and if I didn’t get it, I’d be starting all over again somewhere else.
